Retirement Accounts

Registered and non-registered accounts provided by MD Management Limited

MD has the registered and non-registered investment accounts you need before and during retirement. Our highly personalized approach to constructing and managing your investment portfolio will help you remain on track to reach your goals. An MD Advisor can help you consider your retirement savings options and show you the benefits of incorporating an MD RRSP and other portfolio options within your overall wealth management plan.

A registered retirement savings plan (RRSP) is an investment account with special tax benefits to help you maximize your retirement savings. Contributions to your RRSP grow unaffected by taxes and they reduce your taxable income. RRSP withdrawals are treated as taxable income.

The maximum you can contribute to your RRSP is 18% of your eligible income from the previous year (up to a maximum dollar value), less the pension adjustment (PA) for the same year.

Year Contribution Limit
2014 $24,270
2015 $24,930
2016 $25,370

A registered retirement income fund (RRIF) is used to withdraw retirement income. The investments inside the RRIF continue to grow tax-sheltered like they do in an RRSP. You can continue to manage your RRIF the same way you manage your RRSP, but you can’t contribute to a RRIF.

You must convert your RRSP to a RRIF or another income option, like an annuity, by the end of the year you turn 71. RRIFs have annual mandatory minimum withdrawals. All RRIF withdrawals are considered income and must be reported on your personal tax return.

RRSP and RRIF Investment Options

MD has a special series of MD mutual funds that allow RRSP and RRIF investors to achieve an appropriate asset allocation and level of diversification. Read more about an investment opportunity for RRSP and RRIF investors. You can also hold stocks, exchange traded funds (ETFs), fixed income and non-MD mutual funds.

Individual pension plans (IPPs) are alternative retirement savings vehicles that allow for enhanced tax relief and increased pension benefits beyond those available through RRSPs and other retirement plans. They can be set up for one person or for a group of employees in the same company.
